Most of what can be seen today within the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem belongs to the Islamic period. Spanning some thirteen centuries, these remains reflect to some extent the different stages of this sequence and illustrate the changes that took place throughout its history. In a way, Jerusalem and its monuments of the Islamic period may be considered representative of most of the Islamic art through the ages.
