Jerusalem in the roman and byzantine periods

In the year 70 C.E. after three years of war against the Romans, Jewish Jerusalem was concuquered by the Emperor Titus. The Temple was burnt to the ground and the whole city was destroyed except for the towers in the west, and part of the Tenth Legion. The city was given the name Aelia Caoitolina.
