Although it is Israel's capital and its most populous city, Jerusalem clings to an air of self-contented insularity that has marked it through most of its history - a holy city in the mountains that sets itsefl apart from the rest of the world. Israel's national energy pulses below on the coastal plain - industry, theatre, commerce - but it is the thin spiritual line stretching down the Judean Hills from Jerusalem that gives energy purpose.
